The last decade was the hottest on record globally and data shows cases of heat-related illness are increasing locally. The City of Lincoln launched its Climate Action Plan in 2021, which included a key initiative to create a Heat Response Plan for Lincoln and Lancaster County. The Health Department has led the development of the Heat Response Plan to help the community prepare for and respond to extreme heat events. The plan helps people stay safe as temperatures rise and provides a coordinated framework with clear definitions, thresholds, and action steps for City and County leaders, community partners, and residents.
The Heat Response Plan involves a wide range of partners— including City and County leaders, the National Weather Service, public education and health care systems, utility providers, cultural centers, child care centers, tribal organizations, and community-based organizations that support at-risk populations. The Department continues to engage new partners to ensure the plan is as comprehensive and effective as possible.
