Knox Box Program

KnoxBox mounted on the side of a building. What is the Knox Box program?
The Knox Box program is a controlled key access program that allows LFR to access stored keys, in partnership with building owners, through a proprietary mechanical key system.  The LFR Knox Box system has been in place since 1984 and currently stores over 1500 property keys, in over 450 Knox Boxes throughout the City of Lincoln.

What is a “Knox Box”?
A Knox Box is a secured, reinforced steel, key box that only LFR has access to.

How does the Knox Box System work?
In the event of an incident at a property that has a Knox Box on location.  Any arriving LFR fire apparatus, other that ambulances, have a Knox Box key secured in the cab.  This ensures that no matter which unit responds to the incident, LFR will have access to your property.  The Knox Box key is used to open the Knox Box on site and retrieve keys that have been placed in cooperation with the building representative and LFR prior to the incident.  This allows LFR timely access to the structure and decreases the potential of property damage due to forcible entry by LFR or additional damage that may be caused by not mitigating an incident earlier such as fire, broken water pipe, etc.

How do I get a Knox Box for my property?
Click on the link below to be taken to a third-party, authorized, in-state dealer to purchase a Knox Box for your property. Typical delivery time is 4-6 weeks from the Knox Corporation.

Who mounts the Knox Box?
The property owner or representative is responsible for mounting their Knox Box onto their property.

Where do I mount the Knox Box on my building?
Within 10 feet of the main entrance, preferably closest to the fire alarm panel, between 5 and 6 feet high, visible from the roadway or parking area approaching the building (Lincoln Municipal Code, 19.03.140).

What keys need to be inside of the Knox Box?
LFR requests that keys, fobs, RFID cards, be provided by the property owner or representative for doors that access: the building, apartments, suites, fire alarm panel, fire pump room, electrical panels, water supply controls, elevator controls, and HVAC controls be placed into the Knox Box for LFR to support fireground operations.

How do I secure or open my Knox Box?
Only LFR can secure or open your Knox Box.  If you need to have keys secured or the Knox Box opened to update and change out keys, please complete the REQUEST TO SCHEDULE KNOX BOX TO BE SECURED/OPENED form and an on-duty crew will meet with you to open your Knox Box.  Please keep in mind that the crew is on-duty and may be dispatched to respond to an emergency call; if this occurs just prior to or during an appointment, the appointment time will be rescheduled with you and LFR.

Can I purchase a Knox Box for my residence?
Yes, The Knox Corp produces residential Knox boxes.  Please keep in mind that these Knox Boxes only store a single key.

Can I give LFR the code to my personal lock box or the location of a hidden key on my property?
No, LFR does not store access codes or locations of hidden keys due to liability when property ownership is changed, also Lincoln Communications Center does not store access codes or locations of hidden keys.  If you want LFR to have access to your property, you are required to purchase a Knox Box for your property and contact LFR to secure it.

I have a different question about the Knox Box Program.
Please contact the LFR Battalion Chief in charge of the Knox Box Program.

Emergency Medical Services

Lincoln Fire & Rescue began providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) in 1997 when all LF&R engines became ALS with the addition of a Nationally Registered paramedics.

LF&R assumed sole responsibility of providing 911-ambulance service on January 1 2001 and has been successfully providing ALS service to the citizens of Lincoln and the surrounding counties since.

LF&R operates seven (7) front line ambulances 24 hours each day and has five (5) ready reserve ambulances available when demand dictates. Staffing of front line ambulances consists of a Nationally Registered paramedic and a State certified EMT.

LF&R transported approximately 21,000 patients in 2021 and has noted a steady rise in patient transport over the last several years.

LF&R receives medical direction from Dr. Noah Bernhardson, a board certified emergency physician. Dr. Bernhardson is actively involved in working with LF&R and frequently rides with the EMS supervisors. Paramedics operate with open protocols and have the ability of making base physician contact at any of the four hospitals with portable radios or cellular telephone.

Protocols are reviewed each year and updated as necessary to reflect current changes in the industry.

LF&R has three (3) EMS supervisors, one for each shift. These supervisors are all Captains and between the three have over 50 years’ experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine. They are on-duty 24 hours a day and provide direct supervision to the paramedics on their shift. EMS supervisors respond to high acuity calls such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, major trauma and other designated incidents.

The organization has innovative technology and equipment including:

  • LF&R uses Stryker Physio Control LifePak 15 cardiac monitor/defibrillators with 12-lead acquisition/transmission, pacemaker, cardioversion, SPO2, ETCO2, and CO monitoring capabilities.
  • LF&R provides GETAC at-patient-side reporting devices for all front line ambulances. Providers use these devices to enter patient care information into ZOLL’s Tablet ePCR.
  • LF&R paramedics obtain patient 12-lead EKGs and transmit them to the hospitals using the LifeNet system where the physicians receive a diagnostic quality EKG. Paramedics are trained to interpret EKGs for STEMIs and declare “cardiac alerts” in the field. The “average” “door-to-balloon” time in Lincoln is less than 60 minutes whereas the national average is 90 minutes.
  • Airway management is provided with CPAP, i-gel® airways, ET tubes, and McGrath™ video laryngoscopes.
  • LF&R began participating in the American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline® program to improve STEMI care through a coordinated system. LF&R received a Silver award in 2015, a Gold award in 2016 and Gold Plus awards in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
  • LF&R uses the Stryker Power Load system on all front line medic units for patient transport.
  • LF&R began aggressively treating Out-of-Hospital-Cardiac-Arrest (OHCA) in 2013. Our cardiac arrest protocol is designed to improve survivability from OHCA and LF&R has noted a significant increase in the number of OHCA patients who are discharged from the hospital neurologically intact.
  • LF&R began participating in the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) in 2013. LF&R was the first agency in Nebraska to join CARES.
  • LF&R obtains cardiac arrest data by interrogating the LP-15 monitor using the Code Stat Reviewer software. This data is used to provide feedback to the crews using a Post Incident Feedback form and for data to submit to CARES.
  • Lincoln Fire uses the Operative IQ data base system and EMS vending machines to promote a state of readiness while reducing EMS pharmacology and supply costs.
